Your passport is the foundation of every visa application. Here is how e-passport renewal works in Bangladesh, how long it really takes, and the validity rules that catch travellers out.
Every visa refusal we see that could have been avoided entirely traces back to the same thing: a passport that was not ready. Bangladesh has moved to electronic passports, and while the process is more organised than the old machine-readable system, the timelines are long enough that leaving renewal until you have booked a trip is a genuine risk.
The six-month rule
Start here, because it governs everything else. Almost every country requires your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry — and many visa authorities apply it to the date you apply, not the date you fly. The UAE, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and the Schengen countries all enforce it. Airlines enforce it too, at check-in in Dhaka, which means you can hold a valid visa and still be denied boarding.
A second rule catches people out: several countries require the passport to have been issued within the last ten years, which matters if you hold a long-validity document. And you need blank pages — two at minimum, more if you travel frequently.
The practical advice we give every client: if your passport has less than nine months of validity, renew it before you plan anything else.
How renewal works
The process is online first, in person second.
- Apply online through the official e-passport portal. You will choose your passport type, page count (48 or 64 pages) and validity (five or ten years), and enter your details exactly as they appear on your National ID. A mismatch between your NID and your application is the most common cause of delay.
- Pay the fee online or through a designated bank, and keep the receipt.
- Book an enrolment appointment at your regional passport office and attend in person. Your photograph, fingerprints and iris scan are captured there, and your original NID, birth certificate where applicable, and old passport are checked.
- Police verification follows for most applicants. Renewals are often processed with post-delivery verification, but be reachable at your permanent address during this period.
- Collect the passport from the office once you receive the notification. Track the status online using your application ID and delivery slip.
How long it really takes
Three service levels exist — regular, express and super express — and the published timelines assume everything is in order. In practice, allow considerably more: regular service commonly runs to several weeks, express is faster but still not immediate, and super express is only available in limited circumstances. Peak periods before Eid and the Hajj season slow everything down.
Our standing advice is to begin renewal at least three months before any planned travel, and four months if you also need a visa that requires the new passport number.
Common mistakes
- Name inconsistencies. Your passport name must match your NID, and it should also match your air ticket and educational certificates. Sorting a mismatch after the fact is far harder than getting it right during the application.
- Applying for a visa with a nearly expired passport. Many visas are linked to the passport number. If your passport is replaced mid-application, the visa may have to be reissued.
- Forgetting dependants. Children's passports have shorter validity and expire quietly. Check every family member's document at the same time.
- Assuming the old passport is returned intact. It is usually returned cancelled. If it carries valid visas for other countries, tell the office so those pages are handled correctly — and carry the cancelled passport alongside the new one when you travel.
If your passport is lost abroad
Report the loss to the local police immediately and obtain a written report. Contact the nearest Bangladesh mission, which can issue a travel permit to get you home. This is much easier if you are carrying a photocopy of your passport and have a scan stored in your email, which is why we ask every client to do both before departure.
Keep a simple habit
Once a year, on a date you will remember, check the expiry date on every passport in the household and note the ones falling inside eighteen months. It takes five minutes and it removes the single most disruptive problem a traveller can face — discovering, two weeks before a paid trip, that the document everything depends on is not usable.
